SKOC Saxophone Workshop & Masterclass

I’ve always wanted to get close and personal with the local community, music students and enthusiasts. As I believe music is for everybody and music is meant for sharing, I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and made time to try being a teacher in public. The first edition of Workshop and Masterclass was the Saxophone!

Showcasing various interpretations on Cadenza: “A virtuoso solo passage inserted into a movement in a concerto or other musical work, typically near the end.” For one of SKOC’s arranged pieces, there is a Cadenza for the alto saxophone. It is important to play them with certain rules and guidelines where it involves high notes capturing the unique (and saxy) sound of the saxophone.

Alternate Fingerings & Intonation Tendencies: For saxophone, there aren’t as many alternate fingerings compared to clarinet and flute. The Bb keys are one to look for. Side C trill and Fork F# as well. Knowing the sensitive keys like middle D tends to be sharp and C# key is important as well.

Vibrato Unveiled: A Beginner’s Guide: Embarking on your vibrato journey? We provided a simple and approachable introduction to vibrato practice for aspiring saxophonists. You either use your lips or your air to control your vibrato, following a metronome with different rhythm notation.

Phrasing with connectivity between notes & measures:  Phrasing is about air control, blowing a straight steady airstream. Not to mention having good habits like curved fingers is a good advantage to moving fingers smoothly when changing notes
